Primary Teacher Training

Primary school teachers are those who are responsible in teaching primary level school children. These primary school teachers usually are generalist rather than specialist because the primary curriculum in most countries is an integrated curriculum. They have a wide scope of responsibility toward their classes with their teaching techniques and methodologies.

In order for an individual to be qualified as a primary teacher, he/she must finish a primary teacher training from a reputable and recognized institution of learning. The basic primary teacher training qualification is at least a bachelor's degree or college degree in education, teaching,training, or its equivalent. All primary teachers who are applying for a teaching position are required to have a college degree in education.

In some educational institutions, they offer a three-year education course aimed at preparing students or potential primary teachers for their academic and professional work. Other colleges offer a post-graduate course for primary school teachers to enhance their teaching skills. Before the end of every teacher training, potential primary teachers undergo a practical training where they will be observed how they apply what they have learned. Their strategies, methods, and skills will be evaluated before they will be certified as primary school teachers.

Primary teachers do not merely need good academic ability; they must also be successful in communicating their knowledge and skills in a clear and interesting fashion which will lead to better learning for the children. It is of great value to have patience while teaching school children as their attention span is limited. A sense of humor at times will go a long way for a primary teacher.

The primary teacher has a broad scope of responsibilities. The main core of their work is to develop a working scheme and lesson plans in line with curriculum objectives, missions and visions. These lesson plans are carried out through training and teaching young children.
